Why do we need ‘Buff bones®’?
Osteoporosis is on the rise and many who have low bone density are at a risk of developing the condition. The Australian Health Survey noted that 23% Women and 6% of men aged 50+ have osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can affect any age, but bone loss generally occurs over a long period of time. It is a known fact that loss of bone mass begins around 35 years of age, so it becomes very important to protect bones.
One of the primary concerns is the impact of minimal trauma fractures i.e. a fracture following little or no trauma, on the body. Fracture risks are higher for those with the condition. The three most common sites are the wrists, hips and spine. Within the Pilates for Buff Bones® class at Infinity, there are specific exercises to target these areas. With the aging population and ever-increasing numbers of Australians over 50, a development of osteoporosis and sustained fractures is on the increase, therefore prevention of falls and preventing fractures are important components.
To help prevent fractures, muscle strength and power is addressed in the Pilates class for Buff Bones® to support the body, as well as restoring and integrating fascial connections for efficient joint movement and bone loading. Balance is a vital key for preventing falls.
Within the Buff Bones® class at Infinity Pilates, there are exercises both on the ground and in upright standing to challenge the skill using all the mechanisms of balance.
Who can join in? Anyone that is mobile; can get up and down from the floor and has reasonable balance (steady on two feet) can join in. Those outside of these parameters are recommended to join one of Infinity Pilates Studio’s classes with more targeted exercises that will meet their needs.
What is unique about the program design and system of Buff Bones®? The system uses alignment principles, incorporating the latest research findings in joint mechanics, fascia and bone. The class integrates concepts of the Pilates method, functional training and rehabilitation to develop an adaptive and resilient body. The order and flow of the exercises in Buff Bones® follow the bone health principles of warm up and progression into full body movement sequences, from an upright position, to decompressing the spine on the floor, to standing weight baring positions of the workout.
This class is not only valuable of those with bone loss and osteoporosis but equally important for everybody for daily living.
