Nick Kuiper

All-rounder enjoys Pilates’ options for all

A cocktail of conception-challenging occupations contained in a boundless enthusiasm makes Nick Kuiper a brilliant addition to Infinity Pilates

A star all-rounder at Melbourne’s Loreto and the University of Melbourne, Nick combines a rare blend of intellectual focus with a creative streak. It began with dance lessons throughout childhood and teenage years and extended into music—learning and playing the double bass from age ten.

This continued at university, where Nick undertook a degree in commerce and a diploma of music. The successful qualifications were accompanied by an active sideline in musical performance and comedy that continues to this day.

As studies took precedence over dance, Nick knew some form of physical activity needed to take its place. Pilates had regularly emerged through the connection with dance, enough to prompt completion of an introductory course. As the attraction grew of extending an interest in the method into a career, it spurred a drive to complete Diploma of Pilates Practice with National Pilates Training here in Melbourne.

A training placement with another Melbourne Pilates studio focused on clients with scoliosis. It confirmed the opportunity to specialise, something Nick plans to pursue with further Pilates qualifications in the future.

‘I think Pilates is very accessible so virtually everyone can work through the method. And because it’s so holistic in body, mind, and spirit, there are limitless possibilities across those dimensions. I find it very useful in learning how to breathe better and to stay connected to my body.’

Dance classes and creativity remain constants in a life guided by Pilates. As well as performing double bass-inspired music and comedy, Nick writes musical revues and has extended the dance repertoire to burlesque. In the odd free moment, baking is a further joy.

‘Someone once said you have to travel in your own body a whole lifetime. I’m convinced Pilates makes that possible.’
